It is just like muggle chemistry. There are ingredients that you have to put together to make a potion with certain effects. I have some potion books with me, if you'd like to look at them?

This is a first year potion book. Anything you want to learn is in there, and if you have questions you can ask me. Once you're a little more sure of theory I can take you to my cauldrons.

[She might not be able to understand it all right away, but that's also true of some of the science and math books she's read in the past. It's definitely the kind of book she can curl up with for awhile. Piecing things together and making sense of the theories can be a nice distraction.]
